Oh no.
Poor Bongy, and what rotten luck for you and Mrs Chipvan.
At least you found out before buying, so I guess you'll need to keep searching.

That was the reason for my reply to you regarding Nightmare ,its amazing how QUICK these old vehicles can rust.Anybody thinking of purchasing these vehicles MUST get a professional to inspect the vehicle or you are Very Likely to get STUNG.
You might think it "surface and the rest is Solid" but don,t Think make Sure.
Take Care
Good Luck.
Re: Bongo shot to bits
Yes take note newbies, we are all gutted . some who knew my bongo wouldn't have believed it.
It was not mint when we sold it but tidy and felt it was sold too cheap at £2k
When we first got her it had full body kit and used to get looks , now I can honestly say I wouldn't have it for free.
Bought for £6500
Spent £400o on repairs
Sold for £2000 now heading for scrapyard

Re: Bongo shot to bits
We are in mourning ,poor thing will be made into a kettle or a lamp post soon .
Shame as did this lot
all the suspension sorted , both wish bones, track rods ,drop links ,anti roll bar front and rear , discs pads front and rear , new head ,water pump , alternator, thermostat, lesiure battery, coolant alarm, radiator, gearbox sensers, fuel shut off valve, throttle position sensor , exhaust, new battery.
To get her happy , would be at least both arches and under the arch inside that's what I saw gave up after that probably more , bottom half respray
And cambelt , second water pump and set of glow plugs.
I actually thought if as good as was when we sold it would re do all coolant hoses Inc metal ones next year too .
Hey ho

Re: Bongo shot to bits
Sorry to hear that Have to keep 100pct on top of rust spots however small in my experience. I know it is a bore and a chore (and a never ending job to keep an eye on it and patch em up) but there is something quite satisfying about sealing it off before the rain and salt is sprayed all over our aging vehicles nooks and crannies.
I have one spot to sort out and this coming weekend looks pretty dry and 18C -20C so will sort it. Even if it is a case of 2 coats of P.O.R. 15
for the winter seal off and paint it with the Bongo colour next Spring. You just cannot leave it once spotted, especially this time of year onwards.

Re: Bongo shot to bits
Sorry to hear of your sad news. We forget the first Bongos are now 22 years old and the youngest about 13 maybe 12 years old. So we are driving particularly old vehicles. But that's not to mean we lose heart after all there are T2's out there that are 67 years old!
I have a 1995 model and it has had a lot of new bits of metal added. I left waxoyling for a while and the rust worm took hold. All's good now though but the welding wasn't cheap.
Keep looking Chipvan you'll find a good one. They're still out there.

Yeah but most of them have more weld than metal in them.samuel wrote: But that's not to mean we lose heart after all there are T2's out there that are 67 years old!
2 new bodies and 4 new floor pans.
Re: Bongo shot to bits
But all original, just like Trigger's broom.
Re: Bongo shot to bits
On some the only thing that's original is the chassis number.Bob wrote:But all original, just like Trigger's broom.
(No such thing as a VIN in those days)
Re: Bongo shot to bits
if it has good well known mechanicals and you get it for nowt, spend £2k on welding / arches. If it gives two years service it's just about fine, anything longer is payback.
