Could fuel pump timing be out? Sorry cant be much help as i'm not a techie.

Without going all the way through the thread to check as you may have done this, check the diaphragm in the top of the fuel pump, it's connected via a 10 mm vac pipe from the inlet manifold elbow. Check the vac is there and the pipe is good and that the diaphragm is good, and that the internals are clear and moving, sounds like it's sticking or full of oil, they are known to get oil in em.
Another quick and cheap check to do would be, is the throttle cable adjusted correctly, there are solenoids and switches on the pump that link via the tps to the ECU a bad wire or connection would confuse things.

Probably replace with some car door protector strips, cut "V"'s out to make the curve or just a couple at right angles perhaps ?

Have you removed and cleaned the crank sensor, one ten mm bolt, slide it out (watch the O ring), clean the face of it and clean out the recieving socket with a tissue.
Mine was filled with engine oil which was upsetting the readings to the ECU check the wiring too as its low down on the engine in the splash zone.
Cheap to do and cheap.

I just checked again, none of my images are working from here, put them in the address bar and they work fine, what up with the site trying to change the url to images to HTTPS?

Really sorry to hear that but do let your family know we all think what you've achieved is something really special and its hard to put a value on that. Also thanks for the positive words from everyone, I must admit that it has been an awful past 18 months and wouldn't wish what I have been through on anyone apart from the tw@t's who sold us this van, they can... (use and insert your own imagination here), It's done damage and not just financial and physical but my family life has suffered too, almost to the point I may not need this van by the time it's done!
I do realize that a 1996 bongo with 99.9% zero rust and fully restored would be well sought after and that I have something quite rare now, but was it worth it? Sorry to say... No
...already, I have been offered 10k once this is painted and running correctly, nice to know a figure on the cost of the damage done

What's the plan for the new one - just a donor or will you be doing any work on it? I would love a donor bongo but they're very rare and overpriced in the ROI
