Advice on selling

Post by H&S » Fri Oct 14, 2022 9:31 am

This is a sad post . We have a 2001 V6 petrol bongo, it is our only vehicle and is used for work as well as holidays. For several years we’ve had multiple difficulties with the radiator leaking and spent increasing amounts of money having the leaks repaired. Our mechanic is a bongo specialist. He has now said a new head gasket is needed to fix it. He quoted us £1500 and advised against spending that amount of money given the state and age of the bongo. As an alternative he said we may need a new engine. I don’t have any mechanical knowledge so must be guided by the mechanic. The bodywork is in reasonable condition, MOT until April 2023 and it otherwise runs ok. We paid £14k for it 10 years ago, as an import and had a full JAL conversion which is all in good working order.

Questions – if we do get rid of the bongo where is the best place to sell it ? On the Bongo Fury sales area? Will people be willing to buy it in its present state? Any suggestions as to how much we should ask? (I have seen other posts suggesting we do not ask for valuations but am clueless beyond what I have seen other bongos advertised for).

At the moment we will have to buy a "normal" car as we cannot afford a new campervan. Has anyone experience of part-exchanging a bongo?

Any advice gratefully accepted

You say you have had multiple radiator leaks ?
Has the radiator been replaced, that's a quite common repair and not normally a very expensive repair either ?
If on the other hand you just mean coolant leaks from the various rubber and metal pipes that's a different matter, but again not that expensive, but again none of these warrant a complete engine change!
