Sooty exhaust smoke

Post by Kitkat50 » Mon Mar 10, 2025 12:52 am

Hi everyone my 2000 2.0 l bongo has started giving out lots of sooty smoke which has a really strong patrol smell, I've changed the plugs (which were covered in soot) the HT lead's and the distributor cap and rotor arm and air filter but still sooty, my next guess would be either the lambda sensor or a leaky vacuum pipe somewhere. Has anyone ever come across this problem before. Thanks 🙏

There's likely to be a fault code that'll tell you what the cause is. It might possibly be the MAF, mass air flow meter.

Just a quick update, had a code check done and it was a MAF sensor fault and after some research found that the sensor for the MX 5 does indeed fit and at only £20 a bargain compared to the £175 for the Bongo one listed. Now fitted and running fine, here's a link to the part on eBay.
