Engine rattle

Post by Funky4 » Mon Feb 26, 2007 10:55 pm

Dear all,

Was wondering if you could help me with a tech question? When I start the old dear up I hear a med - high pitch rattle on the rhs of the engine console when im sat in the driver's seat - I have yet to get it on the ramp but I was wondering if anyone has heard of it on their bongos?

I normally clears by the end of a 15 minute drive and was wondering if it was "one of those things a diesel does!" or not!

Any help wold be very helpful

If its got a rattle AND a hum, could be U2 are playing under the bonnet - sorry, couldn't resist that one. Seriously, I'm always hearing little noises like this. Were they always there and I've just developed an ear for them, or are they new. Its called Bongo Owners Angst I think. My latest (Dandy - care to comment) is a little electrical hum in the engine compartment when I switch the ignition on but dont start the engine. It goes for 5 secs of so, then goes intermittent, then stops. I think it may be the fuel pump priming or somesuch, but I had not noticed it until recently. I do also have a little rattle when cold, but it settles down. Our Spacewagon has always had a very noisy engine when started from cold, but goes quiet as anything once its been running a few minutes. And its given 5 years faultless service. Hope this helps in a roundabout way.

I too hear a high pitch noise, which sound like bits of metal just skiffing each other. After a short while it disappears! :)

Supreme Being...........it's either the glow plug relay cutting in and out or the solenoid which raises the idle speed when cold. The latter can be diagnosed by lightly placing your foot on the throttle pedal as you turn on the ignition switch - the pedal goes down a few mm...........same when you switch on the air con............. :)

As far as I know they have - it just raises the idle speed as required............

Can't say I've noticed my tickover any faster when cold either - but it runs OK so I'm not bothered.

Think it's a feature on most diesels Dandy. Certainly got them on the Townace/Lucida range.

It's on the pump - and moves the throttle lever.
Lift the hatch, switch on the "ignition"....and follow your ears and eyes
