Coolant loss- How to fix a pinhole any ideas?

Post by duncand » Sat Mar 17, 2007 3:23 pm

Hi everyone

I'd appreciate some ideas for the following problem.

I noticed I'd lost coolant and set about trying to find what I expected to be a leaking rubber hose somewhere. However, when I found the leak, it was due to a pinhole on a metal protrusion going into the engine that one of the coolant pipes situated above the alternator connects to.

Whilst I ponder how best to fix this I'm wondering if anyone else got some bright ideas. At the moment I'm thinking of something like chemical metal smeared over the pinhole.

Thanks for any input.

Chemical metal may work to block a pinhole, if you can get the surface clean enough to get it to stick.

I would have thought that if you have a pinhole in a metal pipe then it must be well rotten and you need to do more than just fix this one pinhole. How about (if practicable) finding a slightly bigger bit of tube and sliding it over the damaged one having first smeared everything with plastic metal??

Or even putting a new rubber tube on and making sure it covers the hole

You will need to check the quality of your coolant and also make sure that when you replace the coolant you blled the systen correctly. Poor quality coolant will cause the metal pipes to corrode.

Whatever you do get it done properly, it will be no good if you are belting down the motorway and it blows again only worse would it. Better safe than sorry. Good luck, happy motoring.

Hi All,

Had the same thing happen with my Pajero.
Removed pipe from engine block and removed the rotten area which produced a split from the pin hole.
Then i braised the open split and files back to shape.

Cheers

Not sure if its the same part, but BongoBits do seem to stock most of the hoses & pipes. May be a wise investment to replace it
