Speed shouldn't make any differance co's the stat will open and the rad kick in. Overheating must be caused by airlocks/blocked bypass/cracked head/blown gasket/waterpump. Now I am Going to watch the golf. Good Bongo

of course speed makes a difference, its common knowledge that a thrashed car will overheat

Well we have some big hills around here, and our bongo copes well enough, got a good radiator to cool her down

By 'eck this thread has EXPLODED since I went down for my tea. I'm still with Peter. I wish Dandy, or Grumpo or one of the other BF wizards were here to comment, because I can lay no claim to understanding the topic above what I see as the sense of it. I PM'd bj4 today to see if he could get a line on Japanese Bongo mechanics who must be an excellent source of authoritative advice if we could get some comment from them. Its a long shot but you never know.

Mike I still can't believe that such a big diesil engine does not use the radiator so much, hope you can get a reply from the Japaneese branch to fuel this debate

what im trying to say is maybe doing 70-80mph in a motor that size with 4 gears and the engine under the seats is a bit much, some get away with it others not. just my opinion

Why does the bottom hose remain cool after driving 100 miles to-day at 70mph ? bottom hose cool=stat closed=rad not in use ???It's a fact

still not convinced, bypass the radiator and see how far you get, It is there for a reason. If they get blocked or restricted the bongo will overheat. Any way have a great Easter

i had major problems with overheating last week while having the peddle to the metal temp gauge hit the top. pulled over and steam was coming out the overflow pipe.
replaced stat and bled system no problem (first time in 18 months of owning my bongo). ran the engine static for about half hour, temp gauge at 1130. took for test drive 60-70 mph no problem. put foot down past 80 mph temp gauge rises, slow down temp gauage falls. turn to rev counter, at 60-70mph revs around 2500 no problem. at 80 mph revs hit 3000 temp rises and i become baffled. read through this thread from beginning to end and conclude if you want to drive fast buy a sports car.

Going from memory pauls, you are experiencing the same peculiarities as paul9 was having.... by the way paul9, did you solve the problem?

I think you've summed it up beautifully pauls. The dear old Bongo is trying to tell us something we ought to know already. This is not a racing car engine, just a good honest lump.

just fitted new rad, left the holey thermostat in thinking if the rad was the problem then it would really cool the water, but no so far, iv only blead the system going to take it for a run easter egg hunting, ill let you know if anything is different
