no, bdc
i have a bottle of diesel with a clear pipe connected direct. Takes the filter out of the equation.
i have just removed the solenoid. tried starting it without the spring and plunger Gary said to take out. The pump sucked the diesel out of the bottle, but not at a very powerful rate. It sort of went up the tube and then came back down again. I don't know what all of this means.
In order to get to the solenoid, I had to remove the top set of fuel injector pipes. So while they were out, I blew through them. No blockages there.

Did it start?.........Did all the fuel drop back or was it a big bubble of air travelling down the pipe?....have you disconnected an injector to see if fuel is pumping from the bottle out of the pump?

Bad news, if the inlet filter is clear everything from outside the pump has been taken out of the equation so with the bottle and open injector feed the pump must be cream crackered...............hope im wrong.

Well...
Will let you know. However, we may have narrowed it to the solenoid. Just have to test it. Bongopatrol says I should crank the engine for longer than I have been. That is, I haven't given the pump enough time to draw fuel up the lines.
Bloody Bongo Bits!! They want £55 for one of these solenoid thingy's!!!!!!!!
Wish me luck!

Well...
It's fixed. Finally. Mechanic went down the entire fuel system from top to bottom. Couldn't figure out what the problem was. Even brought some guy from Mazda over. He couldn't figure it out either.
So, the last possible thing to look at was the fuel tank. He opened this up and found two big pieces of metal. Supposedly some sort applicators for a fuel additive. I've never heard of it.
He took these out and cleaned the tank and re-installed. Tried starting and there was life!
Two items to think about here:
My mechanic doesn't believe the metal pieces he took out could really cause a blockage.
He thinks that the problem was more to do with using rapeseed oil in the fuel. I was running a 30% rape to diesel mix.
However, he says he can't really be sure in either case and that the whole ordeal was a complete mystery. Regretably, I'm back to straight diesel.
Just thought I'd let you know how it ended. Maybe you guys would like to close this one off now. I certainly don't ever want to see it again!!!!

Well great news it has finally been sorted - what an ordeal! Good news is rapeseed is now too expensive to bother with anyway
