Ive used 10w-40 in the past but i notice they now do a 5w-40 that says "turbo" up the side. Would the Turbo version be better suited? Just about getting to 100,000 miles

5W 30 is pretty thin, and would be ideal for colder climes and, I guess, short runs as mentioned above. Has anyone using this grade noticed if the oil consumption has gone up?
I'd be very surprised indeed if using 10W 30 or 40 oil caused a significant increase in fuel consumption over 5W.
For normal driving and/or motorway runs, I'd rather stick with 10W.
I love the way this forum software doens't flag up new post of interest. Just to answer this, I see it t'other way round. I was told long ago that a very large proportion of engine wear happend in the 1st 2 mins of running, due to sluggish circulation of cold viscous oil. So that why I prefer a thinner low end spec if my Bongo is doing 2 x daily 5 mile runs. Its never really going to get to the upper end (30/40) bit. Effect on fuel consumption is probably minimal, but must be theoretically true so mentioned for fun.
As far as the Bongos other life is concerned, its on the open road doing 200rpm @ 65mph and with plenty of engine cooling (provided system is healthy). I think 30 is a safe bet for that in UK climates. The only time it is inferior is in heatwaves, lots of hard work in the hills, towing heavy loads, or sat in motorway traffic jams maybe.
I'd love to use 5W/40 but its a lot dearer. Life's a trade-off I guess.
TBH I can't think it matters that much which you use, but might as well consider what kind of lifestyle your engine is likely to have and base decision on that.

I put some 5/30w in at the last change.......in October 09.... Wilkinsons semi synthetic....yep Wilkinsons....
Bongo is due a change in April, so I will be visiting Peterborough before then and will use my normal Fuchs 5/30w

Not if it costs you a turbo it shouldn't.
Good oil is cheaper than a turbo.

i have always used 5 30 in ours except for once when i had to use some 10 40 soon got drained out as i couldnt afford the increased cost in fuel due to the drag increase in the engine.

Now that's interesting. Not having tried 10/40 I've never had the chance to do a comparison so thought it best to yield on that point, but now.......

i cant guarentee it but i reacon we lost around 4 mpg just with the change in oil. hence why it was dropped asap and i used it a a flushing oil.

For main running (not during warm up) it is the 30/40/50 number that defines viscosity and thus amount of internal "drag" in the engine.
The higher that number the thicker the oil should stay when hot.
5w/40 is (roughly) 33% thicker than 5w/30 and will result in proportionally more internal "drag".

I tried a 10/40 oil and found that the mpg dropped.Back on 5/30 now(Fuchs full synthetic) about £17-£18 for 4 litres.Much better on fuel again.

I'm still on Magnatec. When I first used it I noticed a marked difference in engine noise (quieter), and fingers crossed it's protecting from the moment you turn the key, as they say. Also noticed that the oil lasts alot longer therefore less changes.

I use Magnatec also £26.00 for 8 litres at Costco.

Our local ASDA was selling Castrol GTX Diesel 10/40 at £3.50 for a 4litre tub, bought five tubs. good bargain. I average just over 30mpg on the 10/40 so maybe I could get around 35mpg if I switch to a 5/30 grade if your figures are accurate dreamwarrior.
