Oh dear, if its for a green one then thats no use at all, lol.
I think that the part number above may be wrong, are you sure that its not D78CP18(A)? That would be an NEC uPD78CP18(A) which looks correct, I can't find any reference to a 19 version. Theres a couple of Bongo ECUs on ebay at the moment, if I can pick one up cheap then I'll see if I can read it, the 41-pin 'connector' brings all the necessary lines out but chances are that the protection bit is set.

Similar but slightly different numbers
Also chip number is
D78CP 18GF (A) and NOT D78CP 19GF (A) as previously stated.

Probably close enough then.
I had a quick look through the datasheet, there is no obvious reference to a security bit so you should be able to hook the ECU straight up to an EPROM programmer, select 27C256 and read the memory straight out of it. If that is the case then it would be the easiest ECU that I've ever hacked. I already have a disassembler for the NEC 78K series too, that should work with this processor.

I knew (or believed) it possible - just need to find someone with the knowhow.

OK, had a look at the datasheet. As I suspected, it makes about as much sense as Gordon Brown.
Question to rhinoman: If you are able to rip the memory, will it be in ladder logic format? (this sounds possible because the ECU is basically, from my simple viewpoint, just a glorified input/output device.)
If the answer is yes, then I have a chance of making sense of it. It will tell us precisely how the ECU works and put to rest a lot of the cooling system theories.
And the answer to your first query jaylee, is yes, providing rhinoman comes up with the goods (no pressure rhinoman)
As for being able to tweak the ECU? very likely not......................but we are working on it.

You'll know a HUGE amount more of what can be done with hacking ECUs than I can even sniff at rhinoman but I don't imagine there's much can be benefited from hacking a bongo one as far as engine tuning - the pump is purely mechanical BUT - post '99 diesels have a partially electronic fly by wire fuel pump which could be right up your street
