Think I have done it but I am sure i can be corrected. Found an elbowy type pipe (as per the previous diagram lushprojects diagram) with a small pipe-lette ( :? ) coming out of it. Pulled that pipe-lette of - loads air out and then followed by new coolant. Attached the disconnected pipe i found earlier. Followed the topping up procedure which needed a fair bit of water to be added. Eng temp seems to be stable and no cooling fans blasting away. Went for a short road trip too and no temp probs. Time will tell.

Thanks for your help.

I may of course open up a new thread later this week on how to replace the cylinder head.

As long as you took plenty of time, revved it loads to get the temperature up, got burps of air out & got the bottom hose hot ( coming out of the bottom of the rad on passy side), thus proving the stat opens fully.
Did you use the funnel? When you start the level drops in the funnel when you rev it, once the stat opens (I think) this changes to the level going up in the funnel slightly when you rev it.
I wonder why they disconnected the bleed pipe? That should stay conected, check it for leaks just in case, it can be replaced with a length of coolant hose of the right diameter if necessary, or I think Ian sells them. If you try & take it off after bleeding you're going to introduce air back in if you're not careful.
Also watch it doesn't rub on the alternator, slit a length of hosepipe & put it over it to protect it.
