Re: running hot !!
In addition to the above...I have found that reading the cylinderhead temp from a "bolt on" sensor positioned at the rear of the cylinder head is normall within 2C of the coolant exiting the head via the hose in question.....most of the time it reads the same but when the temp fluctuates it lags behind by a few secs and a couple of degrees

Hi tuftyfreer,
I'm a Bongo noob too
If it's any consolation my first week of ownership was a disaster....then things got worse
This was due to some serious neglect by the previous owner.
On the plus side my mother has had Bongo for around 3 years. It's her daily drive and she does a fair few miles in it too. She's never had a problem with it. Proof that they are a good vehicle when properly looked after.
However, after my experience,my dad(retired mechanic) is now checking the coolant system over with a fine tooth comb and is going to fit a low coolant alarm and replace the main hoses too.

In my very recent opinion....Finding a good Bongo mechanic and having things checked over is certainly a good idea. As are any alarms properly fitted. Regular coolant level checks should be part of your routine (regardless of what vehicle you own!).
So you are definitely doing the right thing, for peace of mind if nothing else

Re: running hot !!
I have my sensor at the back of the engine block as suggested by Haydn. On a good long run this week, mine sits at 84, creeping up to about 90 if I am stuck in traffic, (and this hot weather!!) My temp needle stays happy at about the 11 o'clock on the gauge
However, I have just the digital temp/volt sensor, not the dual one, so not sure how they work in comparison, but surely they must be calibrated the same?
Anyway, thats my ten pence worth, hope its some use
