2 litres ones are like that, had a few, less haste is more speed especially when cold in the mornings..
You will get used to kind of easing off slightly when it wants to change and the changes come easier..

I dont have much experience of the petrol engined bongos, but they certainly are a bit higher reving than the diesel, and coupled with the fact that the 2.0l is a little bit gutless I would expect the box is just changing down a bit early as you were asking more of it. I was towing a largish trailer last weekend and on motorway inclines where you would expect it to sit in top and accelerate easily, it was dropping down a gear an seemingly revving its guts out.....backing off a little usually helps, but some hills just require a lower gear.

definitely sounds like a it's good idea to fit a seperate gearbox oil cooler if you want to tow regularly with one then if it's not maintaining lock out.
