Thanks Max' thats useful info. I have a new belt, spring and tensioner.

ok, cam out now...it came out in two parts...then i gave it a tap and now its in three parts..

The cam followers look mostly ok, a couple have some light surface scoring.

The front bearing journal (?) looks like it had been running dry..I'll post some pics later.

All the valves seem to go up and down smoothly to, fingers crossed.

For those that like a bit of Bongo destruction...

So, another question, I was trying to save some cash by not replacing the cam followers but now I'm having second thoughts.
I know I should replace the cam followers with the new cam, any opinions?

Is it a new new cam or an old new cam.

I think this was the original cam, so its done 100k. ^

I'm buying a new Cam and thinking perhaps I should buy new followers too?

I was talking about the new camshaft.
A good old cam and its followers would be pretty cheap, I think.
I would go for a full camshaft kit if I bought new.
100k engine, does it need new parts.
Depends on your finances I suppose.

Hi All,

Well I started assembling all my new parts but during the cam shaft fitting I sheared a bolt off!

I was using a correctly adjusted torque wrench but I guess the bolt was weak.
After an irritating 20 minutes the sheared bolt end was released, but do you think I can find the right Hi tensile bolt? (10 not 8.8)

So does anyone know where i can get the correct bolts that hold the cam journals down?

Thanks

Tim

Hmmm it seems a Flanged bolt M6 40mm 1mm Pitch grd 10.9 is trickier to find that I first thought...

try a couple of the guys selling heads and such for these on ebay, they will have old units coming back in and likley have a few scrap heads and should be able to help you out.

Thanks Allan, thats very nice of you.

Infact after getting a bit emo about it I looked up the part number here:

http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html

Then googled the part number and Mazda, hey presto..well nearly..I found a website called Parts Reunited and supplier that had new ones in stock. After such fun I went crazy and got enough to replace them all! I know I know I'm just a crazy impulsive spend-aholic

So, with any luck I'll have another go this weekend if the bolts turn up.

Well I received the bolts and set about my task, another old bolt broke :( luck would have it I had bought some spares, no great drama other than another wasted 20 minutes extracting the broken bolt. I think they must be stretch bolts? when I measured the old bolts they are fractionally differing in length and shaft width measurement.

On ward with my task, the cam belt now that should be easy. No, it's not.
Do you think I can get the deflection correct, the back of the belt is always slack. I need three hands, one to hold the belt over the bottom pulley, another to hold it tight over the top pulley and the final hand to install the tensioner.

Is there some secret technique I don't know about? :?

Thanks

Tim
