Pretty sure fans are two speed.
Re the heaters are you allowing for the engine to warm up fully? Do the flaps change the position/mode ok? Have you got manual or digital control? if it's digital have you turned it right up to 32 in manual & put the fans on their highest setting?
When I'm bleeding mine I'm wearing gloves, so to check the temp I turn it on to full blasting out of the dash, put my face directly in front of the vent & if your eyeballs arent drying out within 10 seconds, it isn't working right (usual disclaimers apply )

hehe, good test ! I'm not sure, will ask them tomorrow. What was that lever under the bonnet for winter / summer settings ?

It's a lever for cold climate/normal climate, it's a grade option, back for cold climate & forward for normal climate. I'd assume it draws in partially recirced air or something? haven't looked at one in detail TBH.

It may be worth getting the garage to bypass the heater as a last resort. I know of a Bongo that was impossible to bleed until the blocked heater was looped out of the system.

given that it had overheated previous to my purchase, and the state of the Rad / other metal pipes, sounds like the heater matrix is a mess, so maybe a good plan.

Collected scooby today.. Run him the 30 miles home from Furness vale to Sheffield, up a couple of good climbs. All went well, I'd say the temp appears to be running higher than before. I have the Mason mod to temp guage. I'd say normal running was at 12-1 oclock, Higher speed flat ish runs for a good deal of time were more like 2 oclock, good long climbs went up to a bit more but still a good deal below the H temp. Given it was a hot day, I'm pretty happy.. Going to run him down to shropshire at weekend.. see how that goes

bleed, i think, forewarded your tips this morning. Still not sure that my fans are right though as he still said they ran at one speed.

That sounds right, it has to get bloody hot to get up to high speed, as soon as the low speed fan cuts in it should bring it down, so if it's working right, the high speed fan shouldn't kick in. If you want to test it, take out the fuse that controls the slow speed fan (I think it's the one far right on the fuse box behind the starter battery, if not its the one next to it) then it should get hot enough to switch on the high speed fan.
I did this when I was adding the Steel seal (which didn't work), high speed fan cut in as the top hose got to @99 degrees celsius. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're monitoring temperatures & know what you're doing though.

Hi can some one please tell me if the coolant pipes normally expand to the size of a air canister ??? seem to be having constant problems with over heating, and water vanishing from the tank but no water is found on the ground. ???

That sounds like the system is pressurising, are all the hoses like that? If there is no leak evident there's a good chance the head/gasket has gone. Is it lumpy on start up, any steam out of the exhaust at all?
It could just be the old hoses swelling up & you've got pinhole leaks that are evaporating on a hot engine? Lots of possibilities including the waterpump.
Worth pressure testing the cooling system up to @ 1 bar - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=38823 to see if it holds pressure or if you can see any leaks
Have you had any work done on the cooling/heating system recently? could it be that it hasn't been bled properly & airlocked?

No they shouldn't normally do that.
I've seen a few hoses swell like that, when they need to be replaced.
