I would just like to express my displeasure regarding number 5 with the use of this yellow smiley eye roll feature.

However my son is rather partial to number 4.

Getting back to topic.
Theory sounds good. Have you actually tried this? Reason for asking may be clear from the following pic of an expansion tank that has been split along the welded seam.

As you can see, the tank is compartmentalised, each of the 9 compartments joining to the next by a narrow (4mm wide) slit (red marks).
Unless your tank is different,
1 - I'm not sure how you get 20, 10mm nuts in there (Dont think 20xm10's would fit in the first compartment)
2 - As they cant get past the first compartment, how do the other 8 get cleaned?

Hi Steve, from the pictures, it looks as if the split half on the left hand doesn't reach quite halfway of that split section... Hard to tell from the angle. It's a weird thing, the tanks (in general) are rather opaque. I suggest that the plastic isn't actually "caramelized" throughout, just on the inside's (overheating? mix match of coolants? who knows?) I reckon the sheer amount of brown crud makes the tanks appear stained. I know that the tanks have been cleaned in the past (from brown to clear(ish) again) Using a steamer, and kettle descaling tablets.

Oh i see... The 4mm slits allow the coolant to flow should it be required. So are they "baffles" (for want of a better term) then?

I know it looks that as though there is actually a gap, but trust me, there is no way a 10mm nut can get between the chambers, never mind 20 of them!!....and even if there were, can you imagine trying to get them all out again.

Cant actually see them in the pics - thats why I added the red marker lines.
The only reason I can think of for it being designed this way is to direct the flow in a particular path around the tank, creating a calmer flow.
I think your description of the design as 'baffles' is spot on, much the same as the baffles in tanker trucks.

I think it was TGP that suggested that it was a de-gassing tank (rather than just an expansion tank). Until someone disproves this, I'll go along with the idea just because it sounds NOT unreasonable.

If you look at that tank above.....you will see some dirt in the bottom....this can be removed by whatever method you decide to have a go with....BUT....if you notice the rest of the tank it is the actual plastic which is stained all the way through.....no amount of anything will get rid of that..
