There's some black smoke coming from the exhaust, most evident when full throttle applied from start up. He said it was almost certainly the EGS (have I got that right?). A three letter abbreviation with exhaust as the first word, anyway. Hoping it's nothing too serious...

EGR, exhaust gas recirculation , its a vavle that recirculates the gases from the exhaust its not needed to be honest and most block it off. and yes your right nothing to worry about, simply fix, just clogged up by the sounds.

Thanks! Tom at Bell Hill said that people sometimes shear it off in an attempt to increase the mpg. His opinion is that this is ill-advised, and it can have adverse effects - if I've understood him correctly. "Mazda put it there for a reason" he says.

I've been doing a bit of homework on this, since my BONGO really is far too smokey on full throttle.

Seems it was there for tough emmision laws on new cars, now all it has done is left my inlet manifold ? crapped up to the eyeballs with black gunge, hence the smoke.

A bit more reading, then I think i will tackle blocking off the EGR, but NOT with a coin [-X

And also might try and get the manifold off and cleaned, which most people dont attempt.

Springer, I could only find one post from someone who has removed the inlet manifold, there's a little bit of info ON THIS LINK which may help you with the job.
Allans Garage retired. Try PGS (Plymouth Garage Services) or Mayflower Auto Services Plymouth

If you want to blank the egr then Allans supply a pair of blanking plates for a very reasonable price. definitely a good idea to clean the inlet Manifold & while you're at it alll the air intake pipework & the intercooler, it can tend to get gunged up over the years.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

People tend to blank it off rather than shear it off, Mazda put it there to satisfy emissions regs in Japan, it's that simple, shouldn't be any adverse effects if you remove it unless you've aleready got issues anyway, it may lead to the engine running very slightly hotter by some peoples thinking, but with a well maintained system, if that is the case, it shouldn't present any problems, but it'll be a better vehicle to drive without it IMO.

How easy is it to clean out the inlet manifold? I want to do it... but dont want to bite off more than I can chew! I'm planning to blank the EGR this weekend.
Location says where I am... I'd rather be justabout anywhere else! Suggestions or job offers of/in other parts of the UK gladly received...
