Got the car back and had a long chat and an explanation. They replaced the entire alarm to try and rectify the fault, and that didn't cure it. The checked and replaced all connections too. It was only when they put a multimeter on the starter motor that they found the 5 volts. It apparently dies away after a given time so it would seem to be a fault with the starter motor itself, but one that would never really come to light unless fitting an alarm !!
They have fitted these alarms on bongos before, even so, this fault is unique. Anyway they found a solution and all fine now
