As said, the plugs have all checked out okay.
I've always given them a few seconds extra cooking time as a matter of course anyway.

If it is, maybe give the valve a tap with an hammer, as you have just had the back box done havent you?, maybe sumat got lodged/dislogged in the process?
For a minute there I thought you had struck the obvious nail on the head.
Legged it out to check but sadly, its even worse with the switch on.

Have you checked the Glow Plugs when in and working that they are getting a full supply to them and hence are coming up to temperature in the vehicle itself, rather than just on the bench ?

Yes, are all the connections to the Glowplugs tight, no cracks in the Busbar? (Was the rebuild not done in a rush, so maybe as simple as a loose glowplug connection?
Maybe glowplug relay fubar?

With hand on heart, I believe its nowt to do with the rebuild.
Its been happening for a couple of years but been more noticeable since early summer. Previous to new rings it was predominantly chucking out black smoke when either cold or hot (Mostly cold though). Thats now cured, as is the oil consumption problem - Good Times!!
As it was off the road for three months, some of my memory cells may have deterioated in the meantime but fairly certain this has got worse since the fast idle gave up the ghost.

Not too much of a rush.
13 weeks.

Mine gave the same symptoms as you're describing this time last year Chris. I posted about it at the time.
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=35116
Went down the road of glow plugs, fuel pump seals, etc. Had the timing altered by a local recommended diesel engine specialist - didn't make much difference other than making the bongo sound even more like a tractor!
I'd had the glow plugs changed not long before, so didn't think that was the problem. Had a non-return valve fitted on the fuel filter, but TBH none really cured the issue.
Nice weather came and the problem went away.
Over the last week or so, have had a bit of chugging/smoke at start up. Putting it down to colder weather and look forward to another winter of chugging bouncy startups and an even blacker patch at the bottom corner of my white garage door.
If anyone has an answer to this, bring it on.
After the chugging/bouncing has cleared (a few seconds of pressing accelarator) bongo runs as normal, so although an irritating issue (I agree with you Chris with the embarassing smoky startup that you have to justify to collegues

), is a smoky startup during the colder winter months something I just need to accept and live with?
Cheers
Andrew

The Bongo school of thought is usually Cold start (on northern bongo's) accidentally switched on, Cold morning and steam caused by hot exhaust mixing with cold air, Glow plugs or water caused by coolant issues..........
Now General school of thought also suggests......... Air getting in(maybe a joint not quite tight, yet when the engine warms the joint is "sealed")....... Diesel Pump timing..... Fuel brand (some folks with various Bosch pumps have had issues with V power diesel - Bongo pump is a Zexel or rather Bosch Japan) ........ So I guess the simple things 1st then move to the more complex things.......
I have to wonder if the fast idle may need to be checked for setting(s) too....a methodical approach needs to be the order of the day....

Could be time to drain your fuel tank! Never know what is in there partcularly if using bio-diesel or Veggie.

I would still let the engine builder have a wee look if he is close by.
Could be a wee tweak needed and all is well.

Umm has similar symptoms on start with smoke not particularly white but after 5-10 secs runs sweet as a nut
Always been like it but slightly worse now cooler
Will look at all the suggestions here but until found this thread assumed was normal
