I probably gave the "duff" gen - I worked for many years on auto boxes and was taught to check the level in D but I respect the advice given by others.

Same here Alan... I've never worked on auto boxes, BUT!... A few years back (quite a few years back actually) I had my Scorpio Cosworth in at a VERY respected (everybody in the north used this place) old school auto box specialist. With a spot of dexterity, in addition to the wheels being chocked, the handbrake being applied etc... One's right hand elbow can firmly apply the footbrake whilst checking the fluid level.
