I probably gave the "duff" gen - I worked for many years on auto boxes and was taught to check the level in D but I respect the advice given by others.

Same here Alan... I've never worked on auto boxes, BUT!... A few years back (quite a few years back actually) I had my Scorpio Cosworth in at a VERY respected (everybody in the north used this place) old school auto box specialist. I watched for a couple of hours as he upgraded various weak links in various auto boxes, and learned quite a bit from him (well, quite a bit more than the NOTHING i knew previously!) He told me (and i quote from memory) " The real killer of these Ford auto's is that people run them without enough fluid in em,the fluid overheats and wrecks the box/cooler. Peeps check the fluid wrong, they check it with engine off/box cold/in park. The box needs to be up to temp, in "D" (wheels chocked) and checked about ten times till an average "fill" mark is established" Just passing on what he told me, that's how i check mine.

With a spot of dexterity, in addition to the wheels being chocked, the handbrake being applied etc... One's right hand elbow can firmly apply the footbrake whilst checking the fluid level.
