This is a wee bit of a long shot, check the brake pipes coming from the master cylinder, make sure that the rubber or foam insulation is intact. If these pipes rattle against the body it can give you some weird noises.
Cheers..
Hi teenmal
Thanks for that but I have now checked the brake pipes and all seem very secure. The queer thing about this rattle is that is only occurs when the box changes down to 3rd and the revs rise or when the engine is 'gunned' a bit. Its been suggested to me that it could be the air pipework, from filter to turbo, which is a bit loose but would have thought the rattle would be there all the time if this is the case. I'll have a check now its got a bit warmer
Thanks again.

Hi Duxass ,
It is very hard to give an opinion on noises,I can only go by previouse experiences, and reading between the lines the first thing you need to do is get a mechanic to have a look/listen.Probably check the oil pressure.Don't leave it too long running like it is.
All the best,
Mal..

Thanks for that Mal, I'm going to the garage in the next couple of days so will get their opinion on it.
Cheers
