Hi Frog, not sure if you have bled the system yet i did mine a few weeks ago.If your in south lincs i could perhaps pop over to help unless you did get it done today. I can pm you my number if you need a bit of support . Mine took about 35 mins to finally get the thermostat open. Good luck/ well done delete as applicable .

So can someone confirm that the rear matrix part number 51-870B???

Looks like its S54N61A10 61A10 CORE,HEATER UNIT to me but i`m no expert. It does make sense as in the front heating the the evaporater is in front of the matrix, looks the same here.

thats the baby (i have kirstys in my shed,and steves not cutting it up)

as a footnote to this unexplained leak.
i have a theory on these type of leaks, be it the rad, or a pipe, or matrix, they all point back to the stat being lazy.if the system over pressures, something sooner or later is going to give, in your case the rear matrix.
while the system is down,please check your stat,and replace with a gen mazda one, or you may be chasing this one all summer long.

I have that job on hold 'till the spring. Sorry, but i WILL do it, but taking trim panels out in cold weather is asking for trouble. The plastic is brittle in the cold, and trim clips WILL snap off. Spring/ Summer, when the plastic is more flexible, presents no problem!. I have temporarily by-passed the rear heater in the following way, which cuts out a lot of pipework and clips:
To isolate the rear heater:
1 x 2 metre length of coolant-rated hose suitable for around 4-5 bar pressure, about 18mm from memory, , but measure your metal pipe and check ( i found some 16mm tractor hose for coolant, rated 30 bar )....Clip one side to the metal heater return pipe on the PASSENGER side, and feed the pipe across the underside, tucking it behind the bodywork alongside the other metal pipes. Measure the right length to fit onto the metal heater pipe on the DRIVERS side which FEEDS the rear heater, cut, and clip on...10- 15 minutes, only 2 clips, and far better than adding bits of tubing, and it cuts out lots of clips which may cause problems, and should you feel you don't want to replace the rear matrix, it is a permanent repair which can be neatly clipped to the other pipes. If you need photos, I can do them .

I have our old heater matrix in my garage, but I intend to get it refurbished (just in case), so sorry its not up as a doner either. Bongobits got me a price for a new unit when ours went, but from recollection it was in the order of £300, so I went for the less expensive option of a doner unit. I think in our case the cause of the problem was the extreme cold (-20 temps.... prolonged) and the van had been allowed to sit for a few weeks without turning a wheel. This year I just went for a play in the snow now and again to keep it all warm..... which was much more fun. The weak link in the component is the plastic end caps. I wonder if there is an alternative way to make them? For my money the other week link is the fact that you need to remove the entire unit and the internal panel. It would be a much quicker fix if it was accessible from the inder side.

Although we get cold over here, I had rather thought that it's just age, and constant heating and cooling, as the broken stubs look crystalline like broken bakelite, suggesting a gradual degradation of the plastic. I had both front and rear matrices fail within 7 months, and I did the front, and the rear is to be done. I rather favour getting an all- metal one, and that comes down to weighing up cost/ reliability...I just can't justify replacing it with a plastic one here...breakdown services are appalling!
