Japanese owners are known to change water pumps at coolant change times.... just saying..

That would be every two years on average which seems a bit unnessary. A decent quality part should easily give 10 years of service. My everyday car is a Volvo XC70 which is shortly due for second cambelt change at 190,000 miles & the consensus from the forums & owners club is that it should not be replaced as a matter of course as the genuine parts are extremely reliable and will last for another 200,000+ miles.

On the other hand, the other half's Golf GTI needed a new pump after just 47,000 miles as the plastic impeller dropped of shaft due to poor design. So much for VW reliability & German engineering .

Well of course Mike's strapline is:

Which could be applied both to national habits and brand reliability

And I agree with you. I bought a low coolant alarm so it would tell me when a hose needed changing. I look for other devices to provide similar services. And of course it is said the Japanese throw their cars away every 3 years. Lucky us

It's a myth. You only have to look at BMW motorcycles as an example, to say they are unreliable is an understatement. If anyone has heard about the new watercooled horizontal twin engine, it has only just been released onto the market and they have already had three recalls, one of them major. Most BMW motorcycle owners carry spares around with them so that they don't get stranded somewhere

Designed for foreign police forces , no doubt, just like the BMW alloys on police motorcycles in the UK some years back, when they disintegrated!...
Still....if it wasn't for the criminal element over here, I don't think BMW and Mrs. Sadies would sell any cars

I clumsily broke an inner tube valve once with a forecourt Airline. (it is difficult to remove the thing cleanly due to spokes etc in the way and it took half the valve with it!) The recovery van driver said he didn't get many Triumphs, he mostly picked up BMWs and Harleys...

No mixing is the secret,I have seen a few vehicles that have come straight from Japan,the coolant looked like a mixture of Soya Sauce and Bisto.
