Taken glow plugs out... rail doesnt seem to get getting any power.... ive read there is a fuse hidden somewhere and there is a relay.. could you point me in the right direction?

Ill change plugs anyway as I have them out, need to test relay and fuse....

Found them... belled out the link.. is fine and looks fine. Maybe the relay... how do I test this? Can I by 0ass it? Just for testing purposes so I know that its the problem?

Hi,I think you said that you have a digital volt meter fitted to your starter battery,if so it should show a drop of approx .4~.5 of a volt when you switch the ignition on if the plugs are all working.

Good luck..

i don't get any volts to the rail, i used a multi meter on it. Prior to that i had the rail out with a glow plug attached and i used a jump lead to earth the glow plug to see if it would glow. To no avail....

Checked the short inline fuse link, which looked fine and i belled it out with the multimeter. I also belled out the cable from the battery to the relay and the cable from the relay to the rail (blue and black cable) which was also fine (no open circuit) which makes me believe its the relay...

I was just wondering if there is a way of testing the relay? Before i spend the £80 quid on getting a new one

A lot of the relays its possible to open and inspect the contacts, but not all, check visually first!
If you put your hand on the relay cover you can normally feel the click as the relay operates, this is a pretty good indication that it is working but NOT 100%, if your meter shows 12v on the the battery side contact (Blue/Red wire) but no volts on the other side (Black/Blue) even after the click then its a pretty safe bet the relay is faulty.
If the relay doesn't click then;
Check that the coil of the relay is receiving 12 volts during the period it should be operated, Violet wire,
and check that the Black wire is ALWAYS at Zero - 0 volts both when operated and not operated, best is to check that the resistance to earth is also 0 Ohms.

violet wire gets 12v, i get 12v from the blue and red but nothing though to the blue and black.

Also tested all my glow plugs on a spare battery, they all get hot pretty quick. Ones a bit slow but they all work, also the length of my glow plugs is about 101mm.... not the 83mm. Ill do some reading on this... ill go check out the fact sheet.

Pictures of my relay below... Looks in good working order :S

You could try cleaning the contacts in that case, borrow the wife's nail file and just slide it between the contacts there might be some burnt deposit insulating them.
Normally it is the fine wire of the coil that breaks, rather than damaged contacts especially if they look clean.

I put my multi meter across the violet and black connections on the relay, as its a coil i should get some kind of resistance reading. But it reads as an open circuit, i connected it back up to bongo without the cover on as well, nothing happens!

Just delaying the inevitable really.... unless i unwind all the copper and find the break

I noticed on the last pic that the small copper cable was lying across the coil, would have made the coil smaller and maybe burnt it out somewhere. I did try putting it back around the white tie and tried it but no luck.

Right I misread the previous I thought it was operating with the click! Right if its not clicking (operating) then that makes much more sense, it is the normal problem of the coil failing, in which case yes get a replacement, re winding the coil is only for those with lots of time and facilities to hand ;-)
