It is always advisable to give the supplier the max weight that the struts will carry.
This can be done very easily with a set of scales.

I have been thinking of doing something with my bed struts to take the weight of my mattress.  I think  after reading this thread I might pinch the plastic pipe idea.

Finally got gas struts for tailgate. Had to drive down to derby to get them. They did admit they had made a mistake and sent me standard struts instead of uprated struts. 
All sorted now and I am happy as they lift tailgate well with bike rack on.

I made a happy discovery,  The bed struts WILL carry the matress as long as the hatch is folded towards the back of the van, which it is on mine since I have been keeping it open to ventilate the AFT.  
  So the plastic pipe trick isn't needed ATM but handy to know all the same.
