rad was delivered in 2 days from ebay seller, perfect condition.
garage said it was a straight fit, no issues, so it matched the old one perfectly. they sucked up all the air from the coolant system using a vaccum.
been running a few days now, checking coolant, see how it goes.

the fuel smelling stutter on startup has not changed, glowplugs look good, more digging i think

I got a rad which was almost new £60 +shipping and it came with the fans on it ---empied coolant by pullin off the bottom hose and drained into a bucket --- when i refilled I followed the bleeding process via the extended hose. I could only get 9 ltrs into the system when I was told the system holds 13ltr. after a great deal of bleeding then running the bleeding I still couldn't get any more coolant into the system. I had a brainwave and thought I will measure what came out. I filled a 5ltr empty screen wash bottle. so allowing for what I had left and a bit of spillage I found I had 6ltrs drained. So having got 9 ltrs in the system I felt I had resolved a problem that was their when I bought the vehicle a few months earlier. It has been fine since - gauge will go to 1/3 - not needed to top up.

The refill was a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and green antifreeze. However after running hot I had a red tinged mixture so I concluded that while the radiator and engine gave me 6ltrs there must have been at least another 3 ltrs left in the system heaters ect.

sounds like you should have flushed it to me

The total capacity is 13 litres, but you'll never get all of it out unless you use a compressor to force it out. I think I would have also gone for a flush as you don't want to clog nice new rad up with sediment from rest of the system, plus you don't know what bits of metal might still be present in the new rad. As mentioned, you don't want to mix different types of antifreeze as the modern longlife stuff will react with traditional glycol based formula resulting in a gloopy mess.

After I flush mine, I add 5 litres neat antifreeze in to the header tank as that will give you close to 50/50 mix with the fresh water remaining in the system. I've removed my rear heater so have closer to 10 litres capacity.
