should I do this then do you think
Resistors from Maplins

Without knowing precisely what happens at ecm I would suggest trying to keep close to the range of the sensor, but cant say what you have done is wrong.
The best value I think is 390 ohms which when switched in gives a value of 220 ohm ( low end of specification) when sensor is 500 ohm ( ie fan not quite coming on.)
for 44p I would recommend

which has no problem power related. (would give me greater piece of mind.)
I may change my value in future having done additional maths , but currently happy.

I only live 1/2 a mile from Maplins
So I will give it a go
That's lots cheaper than a new ecu

Do I need 3 of those in parrallel
Or just the one

Just the one 390 ohm 2 watt will be more than adequate.

Does anyone have an easy how to guide on this? My fan isn't working and I'd like it on manual override (providing it isn't the fan that is knackered!)

How do you know it's not working

I put a switch in mine next to handbrake
So I can switch it on when I want

Just conect the 2 wires from stat next to handbrake the check fan , un plug and short them together
If that don't bring fan on then
You got to get to the fan it self and give that power

Easy to put a switch in
Just t into the 2 cables and put them to the switch
Use about 80cm of cable and then you don't have to disconnect when removing cover

I will try to take a pic
Be tomorrow tho

I did get the info off here somewhere
I've still not put the resistor thing in

Under the centre consol near to the handbrake there is a sensor that pokes down into the engine compartment (visible from drivers side.
This controls when the scav fan comes on. there is a connector and 2 wires. pull the connector apart and insert both ends of a 220 ish ohm resistor into connector (not the sensor side) the fan should come on. You are connecting to the ECU to turn the fan on use a short on your own vallition (Gasey does)
if still doesnt work
check fuse 1,2,18 underbonnet (fuse positions in downloads area.)
try 1 last as it is bolted into position don't try tugging it (other things should stop working if fuse 1 has gone)

The reason I and others use a switch is purely for abnormal loads eg towing caravans/ large trailers up steep hills (where autobox drops into first). Alternatively for start stop traffic on the M54 whilst stuck in V festival traffic.

Thanks for the tips, that is exactly what I was after.

My van is normally towing and is at the hot end of acceptable (around 100). Doing a coolant flush etc soon but need to get that fan working too.

Will have a look at the weekend.

As an additional check: are the rad fans working?
they should come on with air con switched on.

We use 400 ohm on our overide switch and it works just fine.
As you may know, if you simply short out the connectors, the fan comes on but the orange light will flash on the dash.
When our Bongo got hot - going through steep country lanes on a hot day, I put the scavenger fan on via the switch. However, I suspect it may have been on already and the orange light flashed for a while, presumably because the low resistance due to the heat plus the resistor I put in conspired to produce a low enough resistance to trigger the orange light.

Incidentally, the switch works in an unexpected way. Engine running, it's a simple on / off switch but, turn the ignition off and then turn the switch on and the fan comes on for around 5 minutes, even if you turn the switch off again. However, turn the ignition off, wait a few minutes and then turn the fan on and...nothing. Hope that's clear?

400 ohm is a good value based on my calculations, thanks for showing it works.
which orange light comes on ? which model?
I knew there is a time delay to switching off
initially confused me.
it's controlled by the ECU the reason being for a delay once switched off is to reduce the temperature having been turned on. the rad fans will also continue without ignition once turned on.
if its a time delay or controlled by the ECU for a set temperature I don't know.
PS
re-reading your post
once the ignition is off the ECU ignores the sensors and goes into a set preset sequence ie possibly a timed delay.

It's the glow plug light that flashes to indicate a fault with the circuit.

.
Year 2000 Diesel (The one on the forums home page this month as it happens)
I think it does work on a timer when the ignition is off
