Found the problem. The fan and everything else down there is melted. Obviously from some botched welding job on the sill. Gutted.

Probably get a replacement from George at BongoSpares if you wanted to http://www.bongospares.co.uk/

Be aware that some point between 1999 & 2002 the size of the fittings for the A/C pipes changed so make sure you get a replacement unit from the same year as yours.

Just ordered a complete unit from the Bongo spares place in Halifax. £60 quid, not bad. Perfect opportunity to change the coolant and get in the nooks and crannies with the waxoyl anyway. The fittings shouldn't be a problem. Mine is the early version with cables. Really appreciate the help guys.

You can probably retrieve the fan motor, resistor pack etc. from the old one as well or has it been reduced to slag!

The motor actually works, I hook it up to a supply. It clatters around in the molten surround though! The rest of the unit will have to stay in though. I need to use the vehicle till the new part arrives. How much coolant does a bongo system take? 50/50 mix ok?

Check out the videos on bongo fury site for coolant refill etc :)

The coolant capacity is apparently 13 litres but as you can never drain it all out so you might just get 10 litres in so buy a 5 litre bottle and thoroughly flush it out. You'll also need to get the A/C refrigerant drained if you're taking the whole unit out which should be left to the professionals.

Hopefully the new one will arrive tomorrow. I'm still bewildered why the plug that powers the switch isn't showing a live. Anyone any ideas? The damage is too far down to affect the wiring. And the resistor on the unit looks fine.

Hi
Err..First time I attacked the rear heater, it was the motor gone, and I got one from a fellow member on here, but I did check out and clean the resistor, and the switch while it was out, and I replaced the dash switch by the driver's knee, and verified all the wiring.
Cheers
Helen

Finally I have a working rear motor thanks to the lovely guys at Bongo Spares! Fitted the new unit, flushed and replaced the coolant contents and everything is dandy. Cheers for the help guys. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel with this thing...
