There was a Bongo prototype along the same lines as the DoubleBack that appeared on ebay a while back. It sort of worked although the tailgate had to be left up so the 'pod' could slide out & sit on legs. I think the seal around the join would be the problem area & while it may not be too cold in NZ, you've probably got a lot more creepy crawlies that would soon find their way inside to keep you company!

Ahh so someone has had a go, I would be very interested to see that prototype....
*EDIT - found it here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-BONGO-S ... 7675.l2557

Yep, definitiely would have to create a very good weather seal but I can't see why that can't be done with some rubber similar to that which runs around the AFT. Not too worried about creepy crawlies, there's very few dangerous crawlies here.... Having the tailgate open is fine, it would provide a very good roof! And then maybeeven concertina sides that would fold down from inside the tailgate?
I am by no means an engineer but I think I might mock it up with some cardboard and see how I go. Would be interested to get some advice from the more 'engineery minded'

P.S. apologies to cally for high-jacking this thread

I also agree, Mike...The best place for the loo is in the tunnel that connects to the awning....plenty of airflow!
Cheers

Agreed Helen. Handy space for the loo and any wet / muddy stuff to hang during our glorious British summers

The wife likes a 'proper' toilet so we have a Thetford 'Elegance'. It has all the features of a built in unit such as cassette holding tank and a flush system but it is portable. When camping without the awning it goes at the end of the rock n roll bed so SWMBO can use it in the night otherwise it's in the link. No smell and comfortable for those long sitting sessions!
