Corblimey - thanks for your comments re the Redarc unit - I also searched long and hard over here for a similar solution to the problem, but also with no joy.
It seems some folks (including myself) have found that trying to switch a heavy-duty relay from the charge light circuit is (a) unreliable, and (b)causes the light to glow continuously - I found this unacceptable, as a functioning lamp should warn of any charging problems, which it can't if glowing constantly. I also found it would sometimes operate the relay, and sometimes not - it was dragging the circuit down to about 5volts - below the triggering threshold of the 100A relay.

I also was in contact with Martin, the Bristol chap who sells those moulded trays, and the transistor switching circuit he provided is brilliantly simple.

I have incorporated it into a similar version of Dandywarhole's switching unit, as I also have a 24v Webasto heater to fit to my Bongo when the weather is more suitable to spending time outside.
Consequently I haven't got around to testing it on the Bongo yet, as it will replace my existing split-charge circuit - it works on the bench, and the switching current is so minute I'm sure it will not affect the charge light operation.

If anyone else would like to read the switching circuit article, PM me with your email, and I'll send you it (Imageshack doesn't support pdf files )
