I don't know who locked it. Sorry to over rule moderators, but I can't see any reason why it should be locked. Surely the discussion has not reached a conclusion?

Quite a lot went on with PM's when the topic was locked.
It was stated that too many cooks spoil the broth, some things were said that shouldn't be said etc.but we are all friends again now.
So ........... The show must go on.

I locked the thread chaps, I wrongly thought that all had been discussed on this subject, but now it is unlocked again - are we going to to pass on ideas and opinions so that members who still have overheating problems or worries can benefit

Could the position of the thermostat be part of the problem?
Rover had head problems with the K series engine that was caused by the stat position

Water flows in the opposite direction in the Rover, allowing cold water directly into the head - that is why they have so many problems - see

Very interesting thread

Touch wood no problems with overheating. When I checked the radiator the coolant was bright green, which I guess is good? although in the headertank it looks a bit darker.
Would'nt it be good if someone was to draw a coolant circulation diagram for the Bongo? I might help us understand the whole thing a bit better

I'm no chemist Grumpo but I do know that in the early 90s PSA Group (Citroen/Peugeot) had a big warranty clain headache when they purchased thousands of litres of a particularly bad batch of antifreeze. This had the corrosive effect of disolving most things alloy in the cooling system - water pump impellors sheared off, heads erroded and radiator matrices collapsed. Even 5 years down the line from new PSA were fitting new head, radiator and water pump (I think they went to a coated steel impellor at the same time) under warranty - but only if the dealer pushed hard enough - the whole sorry episode was kept fairly hush, hush - presumably because PSA didn't actually manufacture the dodgy antifreeze.
It was mainly the turbo diesels of the day that were affected - 405/BX in particular, the non turbos seemed to be less of a problem, so I can only put it down to a hotter engine and the reaction with the deadly juice...........so I agree with you there jamesnjane - the engineers got it wrong there
PS.....remember the case (pardon the pun) of the dodgy Austrian wine in the mid 80s?? they were using antifreeze to sweeten it - rumour had it that people were going blind after drinking it.................blind drunk probably

Have no knowledge of the MGF, but looked through that post,the thermostat is on the inlet side of the engine.He modified it to go on the outlet side. Its a shame that he didnt log pressure in the cylinder head too as this may have prooved intresting.

Thanks dandy, so back to the thermostat, when it opens is coolant flowing out of the engine to the radiator, thats how it appears to me

Looks to me that the coolant flow goes out X (higher point in the engine block) to where I have the swollen hose (oooh Matron) to Y at the top of the radiator and back into the engine block from point Z at the bottom of the radiator via the thermostat.
