We've done the walk across fields to Pevensey Castle today to see what it is like and how long it takes from the campsite. We expected it to be very boggy as we have had deluges of rain recently but it wasn't too bad except in one or two places. Hopefully it will be drier in April
It is a completely flat walk (the first 10mins on roadway up the lane from the campsite to the main road and then a couple of mins on the wide pathway beside the A259 before crossing over the road and then the rest is fields all the way). The grass is short grazing so probably OK for pushchairs. There are about 5 stiles and a couple of gates to negotiate and a railway crossing (unprotected but with good visibility either way - see photos) and one plank to avoid the muddiest bit.
The footpath comes out at Westham Parish churchyard from where a tarmac path leads up to Pevensey Castle. The path goes through the outer walls of the castle but you can pay to go into the ruins (from memory only very ruined walls and a pile of cannon balls).

The other side of the castle is Pevensey village (not to be confused with Pevensey Bay on the coast) and a short walk down the high street is the Smugglers Inn - suggest lunch there. They have a children's playground and there is a pub garden should the weather be appropriate.
We returned round the other side of the castle and then rejoined the footpath back to the campsite. Reckon it would take one hour each way.
Also, one of our friends operates the pleasure boat which does trips from the harbour to Beachy Head - we aren't sure whether this will be operating as early as April but we'll ask him as that might be of interest to some Bongoliers - perhaps an early evening trip. Of course it would be weather dependent but if April is like last April we will have the best weather of the year! (Of course it may snow

Hi ya Handyman, I'm sure the locals have a taxi service. Any preference on size of limo that mrs handyman would prefer

As long as it's got a cocktail bar, she won't mind the type of vehicle. But if given the choice, she would prefer a Humvee.

We did the alternative walk on Sunday (battled against Force 7 gales!) along the seafront to the Harbour. Takes 10mins from the campsite to the Harbour, another 5 to the restaurants and a further 5 to the Crumbles shopping centre (or the Sovereign Harbour Shopping Centre as it's apparently now been renamed

)
This is taken from the corner of the camping field towards the harbour. There is a paved path or you can walk on the beach (pebbles)
This is the Harbour, showing the restaurant area (Harvester Inn, 'Simply Pasta', and a Thai restaurant). There is also a Frankies & Bennys at the Crumbles.
Another view of the harbour taken from the lockgates:
Pic of the rally field and one of the sea taken from the bottom of the rally field.
The lock gates are on the further side of the Harbour (5mins walk) and from there you can walk along the seafront to the Leisure Pool (approx 20mins) and Eastbourne centre is a further 30mins walk on from there (or buses run along the seafront).
