I don't think it'll make a jot of difference until the temperature gets into the sub zeros

Yep - it closes off the flap at the inside of the baulkhead if I can remember

I had the cowling off today and remembered this thread so took some photos. But I can't seem to post them.
There are infact two flaps operated by the lever, both opening and closing together (see unattached photos

). With the flaps closed air is drawn up from the engine bay, not fresh from the front.

In the old days iam sure you all remember

the intake on the air filter box ( the ones shaped like a frying pan) had winter and summer settings pointed down for summer and up for winter drawing in warmer air to stop iceing in the carb, think its a similar thing but probably not needed in this country on injection systems. Cooler air is better for performance for the V6ers anyway

not sure about oil burners

Cooler air is better for all engines as it's denser, why do you think TD's have intercoolers?
Only wimpy petrol engines needed to have it warmed up for them, so they didn't catch a cold until the carb was warmed up.

.......only wimpy petrol engines with carbs and single point injection use hot air intakes - so that rules out just about every wimpy petrol engine in the last 10 years.

It hasn't got a carburettor either.

Neither did I.
I was on about the ones with carburetors that turned into a block of ice every time you put your foot down on a cold morning. The poor dears needed warming with hot air before they would wake up and take you to work.
Latent heat of evaporation and all that.........

Ahh the days when diesel used to freeze solid in the tank and you used to have to light a fire under them
