Checking engine oil

I changed my oil on the deck last week and forgot to look/check the sensor - I do it sometime......

Oops, perhaps you don't have to remove the lower covers after all...

I removed them as I was doing a full service - autobox an' all. I didn't even check if the filter could be reached from above - clearly it can! (Mind you, mine was a sod to remove, and I needed to devise a wrench for it - impossible from above.)

So, an easier job than even I thought!!

Teenmal, the covers I was referring to are the two shaped panels which are bolted below the engine and presumably protect it from carp (sic) being thrown up from the raod, and also direct cooling air over the engine (there's a fan at the front.)

Hi,I think there was a bit of Info from Dandywarhol that the oil light on a bongo is dual purpose--level and pressure.
He thinks that there is a sensor near the sump drain plug with a couple of wires going to it.
He was going to check it out when he changed his oil,the he would let us know for sure.

I suspect this is correct, I've been having the oil light come on occasionally recently, and it seems to go on when I corner in one direction and go out when I corner the other way, no leaks or performance issues though. Going to do a top up today. It's nearly 6 months since the last change and we had a big run around Europe in the summer so I guess it's used some. Full service coming up shortly.

Cripes! I would. Given El Bongo (diesel version anyway) likes its oil changed every 3k miles, and undertaking that kind of travelling, regular checking is highly recommended

That's what i thought too mike, you have checked the level a few times since the oil change, surely ICB?

If the oil level sensor is flashing then you are getting extreamly low.

I trust ICB is beginning to sweat a bit...

If the oil light on the Bongo DOESN'T have a dual function - ie: if it only measures pressure - then, as Haydn says, ICB's oil level could be worryingly low; on a 'normal' car, the light coming on when going around a sharp corner would indicate that the remaining oil in the sump has 'sloshed' to the side to such an extent that the oil pick-up pipe has been left temporarily uncovered by oil - so it's sucking air... This would only happen is the oil level was WAY below 'min'

I do hope the light does have a level function sensor too and that it's giving ICB only a slapped wrist...

It's not a good scenario whichever way you look at it. If it's low on oil, then the engine has been running around hotter than it really should be, (for gawd knows how long), the other side of the coin to me suggests that the injector pump isn't providing enough oil pressure, yet another costly repair, and fingers crossed the intermittent low oil pressure hasn't caused irreparable damage somewhere (cheery soul ain't i?)
