SFAIK the viscosity of the oil has the same effect regardless of the fuel.

The oil can't tell what is making the bang.

I'm using 10 40 at the moment in my diesel and would like to try 5 30 to see if there is an MPG improvement. I went to Costco tonight but came away empty handed. Could some of the people using 5 30 suggest some exact products or better still paste some links to where they could be bought please?

I just got mine from a local motor factors on the industrial estate around the corner, 3 to choose from, Dorset Auto Spares, Partco & Friction Linings, always worth shopping around, Check out the likes of the bigger Asda & Tesco stores too, I think they've both got reasonable offers ATM, just check it's rated for use with turbo diesels.

Thanks Kirsty - out of interest what sot of MPG do you get? Mine went down to 20 MPG in the extreme cold but this has picked up since then - now back up to about 26...

Haven't got a clue to be honest over the last 8 months or so, I've been doing so little mileage & short runs, just haven't been keeping tabs on it, especially with chucking veg oil in as & when. Life's too short to stress & it'd be fairly meaningless.
Best I've got has been mid 30's on longer European runs, hauling a load of gear as well, enough for a 3 week trip, worst has probably been low 20's, where I've been doing shorter around town stuff.

Ditto for my 2WD.

As for oil, I use 5W/30, sometimes from Halfords (I remember they had an offer on once) or else cheap stuff (didn't smell nice!) from my local motor factors. I'd have loved to get some Magnatic at half price from Tesco, but it isn't the diesel type so no go :(

I've taken a much less scientific route to selecting oil for my Bongo. My car uses 10w40 semi synthetic (turbo friendly) oil, which is an acceptable option, therefore so does the Bongo.(Saves having different oils hanging about). As regards the fuel consumption, if that was a concern I would never have bought a Bongo in the first place, (It does on a long calm journey nearly 30 mpg, on short local ones a fair bit less).
