Not trying to tune dandy. If you remember, this thread is part of finding out how the cooling system works and for me, that is the goal. (and will remain so until complete - for me that is :wink: )

Sorry about that guys.. Twas I that mentioned about a tweak, :oops: which quite frankly i see no use for regarding the Bongo.. (If it ain't broke & all that.!) :wink:

Diagnostic bit should be quite easy, following the way Mazda did it (through the ECU). But that will be a bonus.
What I am trying to find out is what part the ECU plays in the cooling system.

I THINK it to do with the coolant sensor having several purposes - fan operation/glowplug duration/autobox lockup.........................

The manual suggests this too. Come to think of it Alan, the cooling sensor does seem play quite a big part in the control of things.(according to the manual-ECU section) =D>

Air (boost if applicable) and coolant temperature sensors along with exhaust gas oxygen content produce most of the control over modern ECU's.

My ECU carries the same numbers (other than the 3rd row) as in the photo Rhinoman posted.......

Now whether these numbers have any significance?........... other than just Batch numbers and silly things like that

Lets hope we can now link the Cooling system with how the ECU works the cooling fans..... I am sure Rhinoman will also be able to indicate how the engine fans control is programmed and maybe the switching on temperatures........to us who are less able to understand the ECU.... :?: ...
I remember some lectronic stuff I did in the late 70's :shock: with processors and flips and flops that the silicon chips were said to do (or whatever they call 'em these days)....... prepared to be enlightened........

Once the code is ripped its a lot of work to decipher which bit does which (no ladder logic just straight assembly code), it would seem that the ECU doesn't have that many functions so it shouldn't be as bad as most. I understand that the engine and auto box work very well on these so its probably best to leave them alone. I would think that diagnostics will be the main interest, I presume that there is a serial link that the dealers use, cracking that will be a big step. Knowing what tests the ECU uses for diagnostics helps a lot with fault finding.
Looking at the design of the ECU it would appear to be fairly straightforward to copy the memory to an EPROM mounted on a daughterboard. That way an emulator can be used for real time code changes and the code execution can be traced using a logic analyser.

I haven't been inside a JECS ECU before but on other ECUs the fan operation and speed is controlled by the ECU.

I reckon I may be able to help you with this part. Is a 'serial link' a method of connecting the ECU with the various sensors? If it is, then the manual shows pics of this sort of gear. I'll get a scan (or two) done and post it for you to have a look. If these prove to be what you are looking for, I'll scan the lot - several pages of A4.
And YES, I think the diagnostic side will be of HUGE value. For example, if we could build a rig, it could be used by anyone thinking of buying a particular Bongo. They could give the machine a general health check BEFORE laying out any money.

Several pages in the factory manual are dedicated to fault diagnosis charts which give you an indication of what the ECU can interrogate. Don't have the manual handy - maybe Steve can copy some more pages without enfringing copyright laws 8) If I remember, you can copy 5% of a book without getting yer arse kicked :wink:

However, I didn't get far before I need to ask another question.
In the image below, the left hand side is the pcb top, and the right hand side is the pcb underside.
Yellow line = cct 11, blue line=cct 12, red (dotted) line is just a reference between front and back sides.

I started tracing the two legs, 11 and 12. As you can see, it didn't take long before they both went 'through' the board. Not a problem.But, when they get to items 102, what happens? Each appears to split after reaching component 102. Could you give me some direction on this?
