As you know there are many "shaped" hoses on a Bongo cooling system and I realise that ideally you should always replace any if possible with original Mazda/Ford parts.Preferably NEW ones!
My question is this:-
Is it wise to replace any of the hoses with non Mazda parts ie would it cause harm to replace a shaped hose with a piece of straight hose.it may sound a daft question but in the future we may have to start to make do and mend repairs just to keep these great vehicles on the road!
Any comments welcomed!
I've been thinking along similar lines! Aside from the main shaped hoses, couldn't the smaller heater hoses be replaced with good quality hose of the correct diametre? I don't see why not.
having eventually got to mazda to pick up my stat and hose,
picked mine up today

You couldn't make it up....3rd leak this week
Another pinhole leak. This time the short length of hose that connects the steel heater pipes at the rear of the passenger seat.
These heater pipes are getting replaced with decent quality silicone hose. 16mm isn't it?

It's what I keep saying, they're all the same age, once one goes, expect the rest to follow suit, especially if you've had an overheat. Personally I'd go for a full set of Mazda hoses rather than try & make up my own from lengths of silicone, especially with the issues several have had with weeping from the silicone hose joints in extreme cold, I'd go for proper constant pressure clips if you go silicone.

61-213 is just a straight length of hose though.
Just making a list of part numbers for my phonecall to Mazda tomorrow.....
The 2 rear heater ones are pretty new as it's been bypassed.
The half a swastika shaped top rad one is replaced.
The top rad to header is replaced.
15-261 from the stat already replaced.
Already have 61-214.
Already have 15-186.
Bleed pipe replaced.
So I make that 7 either done already or I have already.
So, 2 front heater and the straight part with the latest pinhole.
The crazy bent one to the rear heater too 61-213.
Bottom large bore 15-185 and 15-186.
Bottom header hose 15-188.
I make that another 7.
So I'm 3 short

Cheers!
Turbo hoses done already, including the top steel one that had
another pinprick hole in it!
I can't afford the steel ones yet.....in fact I can't afford the rubber ones either
I'm hedging my bets, but I'd rather get the rubber hoses replaced asap as they are all springing leaks.
Next will be the bottom two main steel ones.
In an ideal world it would be a case of replacing the job lot....but!
The pain is the coolant top up and that bleeding every time. I have to get 2 hoses changed this week so it may as well be
seven.
Well, it will probably be next week by the time they arrive

missfixit70 wrote:What you've got to bear in mind also is that if you are running it with a leak (other than the danger of complete hose failure), is it holding sufficient pressure in the cooling system? If it's open to atmosphere it may well be running hotter & you could be in danger of creating airlocks if it sucks air back in as it cools?
This is a good point, as it's exactly what's happened to me.
Each pinhole leak has resulted in the 'cold heater'. I now know that this means 'airlock'. Obviously any pinhole leak will suck in air as the coolant cools down and contracts.
So each bandaged pinhole leak requires a re-bleeding. 3 times this week for me...well 4th today in my lunch hour at work.....I have almost lost the will to live
I have a suspicion that although these temporary fixes keep the coolant in, they perhaps do not keep the air out. Water tight is not necessarily airtight.
Meanwhile, the bandage and bleed is the only way I can get to work until the offending hoses arrive.

I supplemented the amalgamation hose tape with glue that was water and heat resistant to ensure I got a good seal with the repair, its holding up well until I can get hold of a new hose!

Yeah it does need something extra
One of mine held fine the other seemed to stop the leak but let air in.......unless there is another leak
-
Have just this minute finished replacing the 2 with holes in. I just can't risk it as I need to get to work....to pay for all these hoses

.
BTW who puts those hose clips on at the most ridiculous angle

? I now have a shredded forearm!
-
All other hoses are on order from a variety of sources. When they have all arrived the guy at the garage is going to change all the rest, change the stat for the genuine Mazda one I have and re-bleed.
It's got to the point where dropping it off and picking it up the next day may well save me from a heart attack and possibly a divorce.
I've had some dodgy vehicles in my time but nothing has ever cost this much or caused me so much stress
-
Surely when all hoses are replaced it's got to be fine
-
Low coolant alarm also due to arrive.

Hi all, we have just sprung a leak, seems to be the same as the one at the start of this thread, 61-214, can't seem to find where to buy it tho.
any help appreciated not sure if I am just too stressed and can't see it. these things don't help when your trying to quit smoking!!!
also does this mean that we need to have the system bled?
