if you have let the pump run out of fuel to stop it, it may be hard to start,as it will have to pull the fuel all the way up from the tank.i would make sure you have a back up battery or someone to jump it in case you kill the battery off.
may be an idea to not wait for the glow plug light to go off before you try to start it,as this is just pulling current when it probably doesnt have much chance of starting on the first couple of attempts.
someone may shout up on this who has more experience of starting after total fuel starvation.

I think the "mechanic" stopped it with the air inlet eventually, so it should be ok & she's driving it to Adrian's in Bury, so should be ok. Oil levels were checked, so it wasn't burning oil either.

I heard that someone had called Ian at the summer bash about a bongo not stopping and empathised. Yep, he did destroy a pair of shoes in the process and was coughing and splattering for a few days later. We got the Solonoid fixed and it ended up happening again to us and I tried the foot on the exhaust method but just couldn't get it to stop! Thankfully, we are now with a different bongo now.

The last time Chris stopped it he stuffed a towel down the air intake and his foot over the exhaust, much easier than just the foot over the exhaust :)

Glad you're now sorted, I know exactly what it feels like when the engine won't stop and the mechanics are useless and can't help either. We couldn't get on the internet to ask for help, if I had been able to, I would have posted up my number and I too would have thought it funny to answer to umbongocat :P

Good luck with it and I hope it's sorted out properly :)

Best to use a solid object that can't break or be sucked into the air intake really, a block of wood or something similar would be best... Just blocking the exhaust on a diesel isn't the best method really, and may not always work. Introducing air into the fuel system (by loosening or removing the bleed valve {if fitted}) would also do the trick, but the air would need purging before attempting to re-start.

imo putting something like a towel over the air inlet could be very expensive if it gets sucked in. we used to have wagons with low mounted air intakes next to the fuel tanks, you fuel up take off your gloves put them on the fuel tank, turn round then they are gone.-----------up the intake with a clater and a puff of smoke.better to block with a piece of board, plywood or something solid.

We'll remember all these tips, but hopefully, we'll never have the same issues again :P It's not fun when it does happen :(
