Bit like the difference between the real Corn Flakes and the Sainsbury 'look-alike'. That's why they are cheaper, and in this particular instance (fan switch) Ady did some tests and was in no doubt that there was a difference (in the samples he checked). I'm hoping he'll come on and clarify. Not trying to pick an arguement, just stating some facts.

cheaper parts have been proven to be false ecconomy on several parts

drop links (lasted months instead of years)
oil filters (dropped oil all over drives)
glow plugs (lasted no time)
thermostats (as above)
gaskets (cost people a fortune to have the job done a second time)
heads (as above )
rads (have extra vents)
hoses (not cheaper either)

Quite right to flag up that there is a risk with compatable parts.

They probably will do the job perfectly but there is allways a risk.
As much as I am a tight git I won't skimp again on parts that may not last and have to be replaced

You can get things that look like Mars Bars and you are told they are "equivalent" to Mars Bars but when you bite one - does it taste like a Mars Bar?

Anybody can SAY something is the same - it doesn't make it the same.

Think this has wandered a bit off topic here. All Nigel wanted was info on how to set his Mason alarm to give a meaninigfull output.
However, I think the subject of 'alternatives to genuine Mazda parts', whilst relevant, should really be a topic in its own right. (there probably is one somewhere in the system)
It could (would) be very interesting and informative to get folks to log up in one place their experiences. I have a couple of thoughts too.....both sides of the discussion. (and no, I'm not sitting on the fence)
Anyone up for it?

I agree with this.... ....a seperate topic would be very helpfull.....reading this forum would put most people off having a Bongo due to the fact that they always cause problems...which I know is not the case....5 years trouble free motoring...no MOT failures...Mikeonb4c has no complaints as many many others who do not post because they only have minor problems......only to be expected with such an old vehicle...I found mine very reliable....until the radiator went tits up.... ....finances dictate a long waiting period for repair... ....but I would trust a Bongo with my wife (not a typo )...

Thanks Steve - yes i did get the info i wanted.

Nigel from Derbyshire aircon is due anytime to sort aircon. That will tell me if fans are working. Then i need to check fans come on at temperature so need to check if sensor switch is working. i am going to follow the guidance of missfixit here and leave well alone on replacement if it's ok. I am getting used to mason and it seems to be working as it should bearing in mind hot ambient temperatures. I am going to buy one of the digital temp gauges Jaylee has fitted [thanks Jaylee ] , maybe beg Steve's help to fit , seems only right as he got his fitted for him !! i reckon the mason combined with the visual gauge will be just right.
