Kinda what I meant, dropping the gears by whatever means, increases the revs

The point about the aircon bringing the fans on sooner, is interesting, do the fans stop running when the climate control stat stops calling for cooling? Even if they do, temporarily raising the setpoint, but not so much that it stops might be better than switching it off altogether.

I find the whole business of when and why the fans come on is interesting, esp. as Bongos get older and you are left to wonder how well the sensors/relay switches are working. For the savvy owner, I wonder if over-ride switches and a Mason or TM2 alarm might be appealing (mind you the Mason still depends on the ageing temp sensor). I have an over-ride on my scavenger fan for passenger and engine component comfort, for use when I feel like it (which is rarely, but nice to have it all the same).

I have also read that older engines generate more heat than newly run in ones although I don't know if it is true for diesels or what the science behind it is. It was from a reasonably good source, Morgan owners Club site.

I'd have thought it was the other way round as "tight" engines have more internal friction than well loosened up ones. However they also have cleaner, less clogged cooling systems so it's probably swings and dodgem cars.

Hi we went over the Col de Telegraph and the Col De Galibier and encountered no problems towing a trailer as well. As I recall it was a hot day and we had the air con on as well. 2.5 diesel. Easy peasy!.
Only problem was having the trailer run into on the Promanarde des Anglais in Nice.
Stopped off in Andorra to have new tyres fitted (as planned) and as the rear brake pads were getting ready, had them done there as well.
The trailer was mainly used for the transportation of the cooking oil, till we got to Luxenberg where we filled all up with diesel and then did the same in Andorra.
No point in paying full price for fuel if you dont have to!

If the cooling system is functioning correctly it should have little trouble dealing with European temps, after all it gets bloody hot in Japan & I'm sure they have big hills there as well (I know they got a big white topped mountain but even a Bongo won't go over that one) & that is the climate the vehicle was designed for.
I must be honest my mason kicks in fairly early (before the fans come in) if queuing in traffic for a while & I usually switch the a/c &the temp drops instantly. The cooling effect of the fans far outweighs the heat output from the condenser rad.
There is, I suppose understandably, rather a lot of paranoia here about cooling & sometime we need to step back & get everything back in its rightful place in our heads!

My point was that if the fans kick in with the a/c off (as they should) you get both benefits more cooling and no heat from the a/c rad either.
If they are not kicking in, or not kicking in early enough, then of course switching the a/c on will help by making them come on straightaway.

Tis true, but the fans seem to kick in really late on any Bongo I have been in, so I prefer to not let it get to that point.
