I loved 'em...noisy, easy to hose the interior floor ...(As a smoker in those days, all fag ash and dog ends were deposited there )...no refinements...plastic seats in kit-form, dogs can't damage them, a factory fitted non-working speedo which had "Morris Minor Twitch", factory fitted dents in the bodywork, and on the series 2 you took the grill of and used it as a barbeque (those flies cook nicely)...and so many things you could do with them

I reckon the conservatory roof people pinched the Safaris twin wall 'double glazed' design ...

When in a Landy .. the air travelling between the 'twin' roof cooled the interior .. parked up in the summer it stops the direct heat from the sun heating up the inner roof panel .. and insulates the inner roof from penetrating cold in the winter ..

All low tech .. and a neat idea ..!!

Sorry for post hijacking as well but are the normal & LSD's interchangeable on the 4WD models ? My rear diff is a bit noisy & wouldn't mind changing it for a limited slip one if possible. Are they a straight swap of would you have to change half shafts as well etc ?

Can I just say that you can easily claim series LR didn't have the "OPTION" if you have never seen an LR that has them fitted- Both my `llA and lll had the front locks. My Series lll was 1971 December chassis 000024 in other word the 24th series lll built when production started.

The locks ..........................WERE NEVER FITTED AS STANDARD.......................... (NOR WAS THE FAIRLY OVERDRIVE)....................................... so whatever you saw they were NOT FITTED with the customer selected OPTION. I suggest you look at any ex UK military ll or lll, they most likely (like my two ex military LR) will have them fitted.

You'd probably be better off changing the complete axle with brakes, hubs & all. If you start unbolting bits you run the risk of disturbing the oil seals. The problem will be locating a suitable LSD unit. While it has been suggested that these units have a yellow sticker on, that was also used to indicate a normal diff has been repaired as part of a recall & there's a good chance that after all this length of time, the sticker will have come off or been covered in underseal. You can use the Russian website & enter the VIN number to check if the van was manufactured with LSD diff, but that may not be practical once the donor vehicle has been scrapped.

Back on topic. It is direct drive to the rear wheels with a morse chain drive to the fronts via a viscous coupling (in the transfer box). No drive to the front wheels (I assume it has the front prop connected, they are sometime removed but you garage should have spotted that?) could be stripped splines somewhere, failed viscous coupling or a failed chain - although I would have thought a chain failure would have resulted in noise as there would be bits flying about. Of course someone may have been in the transfer box before & disabled 4 wheel drive (usually at a customers request as a cheap fix).

We've not heard back from the original poster, but i would expect any decent garage would be able to get the van up on a 2 post lift and check what's going on. It's been covered on here before how to test the 4WD system once all wheels are off the ground.
