Which one you gonna be in Tony? We'll see you in there when we get set up. Is there somewhere to get something to eat in Lauder.

Sorry Stuc can't help you much there as I have never eaten out in Lauder but there does appear to be a chip shop called the Marmais according to the web.

However if you arrive at the junction between the A68 and the A6091 (Melrose Bye Pass) after 4pm you could take a short detour to Melrose. There is a good Chippy there Called the Melrose Abby run by two Arab brothers who are friends of mine (well I am a reasonably good customer of theirs). You can get more than just fish and chips there and have the option of eating in or out.

There is also a good chippy in Jedburgh right besides the Abbey just a few yards off your route.

The only shop that I know of in Lauder is the co-op which is at the opposite end of Lauder from the campsite. There is a petrol station attached to it.

Tony

PS we will try both pubs as they are only a few yards apart and right in the centre of Lauder. But only when we run out of tinnies. :D

Stu, the Pubs are pretty dismal, and if you need any shopping do it before 12 pm on Saturday because apart from the garage everything closes midday, nice campsite but Lauder it's self is not great, you will have to travel to get a decent pub like carfraemill or you may wish to visit a nice town like Peebles or Kelso. Have not used the local chippy for a while so I can,t say if it,s good or bad.
Hope to pop down to the bash some time on Saturday to say hello as I am about only 20 minutes away.

There is a proper pub in Melrose called The Ship, it is close to the Abbey and just a few yards away from the chippy. All the other bars in Melrose are parts of hotels. Melrose is only about 3 miles from Abbotsford House where Sir Walter Scott lived. Since the National Trust for Scotland took over running it following the death of the last family members living there a few years ago, millions have been spent on it to knock it back into shape. I guess that it will now cost a bit more to go there than it did last time I went.

PS: The big supermarkets, Asda, Aldi and Tesco are all in Galashiels. But if travelling up the A7 from Carlisle, Hawick has Sainsburys and Morrisons. Sainsburys is right on the A7 and has a petrol station.

Good call tony regarding the pub in Melrose, quite a nice wee town as well, as you say gala and Hawick are not bad for shops but are not exactly picturesque. Hope to see you tomorrow, pity the weather does not look too good, may improve for Sunday.

A nice weekend north of the border – weather not as bad as forecast or as bad as in Wales a fortnight ago so all-in-all not a bad result. It was good to see some new faces together with a lot of familiar ones too. A few photos from us….
