I once saw a 'high top' AFT on Ebay. This looked like the sort of tupperware high roof you get on VW campers, BUT it still went up!
So I guess it was some sort of diy conversion, of course they probably used an AFT and just put a higher roof on.
I think the conversion could work, although it would be tricky to get it to be 100% like s 'real' AFT, ie all the interlocks and gubbins already mentioned.
I would agree with some other members that the real problems would be insurance and resale value.
Still, it's one hell of a project! Keep us informed!

if you park a aft and a bongolow side by side with the roof up on the aft ,look at the profile of the roofs ,above the gutter line the aft is nearly a right angle curving to the inside of the vehicle wheras the bongolow is a gentler curve ,look at the difference above the winscreen and the area between the tent and the rear hinges and the area infront of the tent and the windscreen, the profiles are all different and i dont see that the roof would fit/seal also the area where the slider mechanism fits is a different profile, and if you lift up the panel above the cab that is the base of the bed you will see another huge difference in the roof ,imnot saying it cant be done but it isnt as easy as doing a vw where the roof profile and strengthining doesnt vary between models of the same wheelbase

I'm very much in line with most of the opinion on here - you're mad, but in an inspired, almost holy-man way!
I say Go for it! But make sure you video it all and put it on YouTube - I want to see your Bongolow snuff movie - oooooh, 'e's cutting its 'ead orffff.....
Good luck
Chris
