The only reference I have is this from Lushproject.
It shows the top connection from the engine and the lower one to the stat.
So is my diagram upside down? Needs someone who has actually SEEN it to confirm.

Also raises another question. Would it be physically possible to fit the hoses on the wrong connection? From the Lushproject diagram below, this looks like a possibility......and if so, what effect would that have?
Too many questions still to be answered. :(

the feeds to the front heater are shown wrong in the picture above.the engine flow feeds into the lower union of the matrix, and the flow exits to the stat via the top union.

Back to the drawing board.
Aftar emails to Helen and phone call to Ady, I now know what it's REALLY like.
Drawing is correct (but not in correct orientation) and the flow direction is wrong. Need to make adjustments.
I'LL BE BACK.

Back from drawing board.
First off, one that shows WHERE it is in the grand scheme of things.

When viewing this animation, bear in mind that the front heater is angled - front face pointing towards the windscreen.
There are 32 tubes in all - 16 supply and 16 return (NOT the combination suggested earlier)
Each tube is approximately 6.5mm bore x 200 long.
The matrix overall dimensions are approximately 216mm long x 164mm high x 54 deep.

One possible (probable) trapped air pocket on system refill is the front heater.
The rear heater is still an unknown - Helen is dissecting one when the weather gets a little kinder (I hope)

Lots of info and your next post with capacity. Strange position of the return if the matrix is at that angle, can you confirm the angle that it is fitted at?

Hi TGP
Here's the actual picture . The two stubs sit horizontally and go through the bulkhead. there are no actual hose stubs for attachment...they broke off (reason for replacement). The stubs become embrittled with age, and just break...This is a reasonably common fault with older Bongos. Apparently mixing shoddy plastic with metal on cooling systems is the way forward...good old all-metal construction is a silly idea (apparently)...plans are on the books to make plastic matrixes next , I expect...after all, we don't want cars lasting more than 5 years , do we...and deny all those manufactures their profit:

Slight digression back to page 5....... and thermostats..... I have found (since I have been looking at the supply of O.E to Mazda and who makes 'em)and been offered a stat that is what could be called an exact copy of the Mazda stat even with the rubber at the top of the centre spindle....and jiggle pin - From China

Height:39.7 mm Bottom diameter:28 mm Top Diameter:52 mm
Temperature degree:82 C
OEM NO:KL01-15-171
Quality:
Open tolerance: ±2oC
Action cycle: No less than 50000 times

More details: high quality under certificate ISO 9000 TS 16949

They will even put them into your own brand boxes for you......

Any idea of price Mike?

and can you explain what 'Action cycle: No less than 50000 times' means?

Thanks rita. Taken a look at the link.
Cost appear to increase from $28.47 (US) to $38.80 (UK). How much is that in real money (£)?
Materials seem to be similar except for the copper content. (thought Mazda stats were brass/bronze)
Still no wiser what 'Action cycle: No less than 50000 times' and would be somewhat concerned about 1 year garauntee.
Think I'll stick to the Mazda one. Bit windy in that respect.

Interesting Link Rita.... never seen that website....or that know that supplier, similar write up though to a brochure I have..... cunning chinese, makes you wonder if they have one big sweat shop and several Brand outlets

As for 50,000 times I guess that would be open/closing .....hot/cold cycles...so if we say...5yr life of 10,000 cycles at 365 days in a year that's 27 hot/cold cycles a day as for 1yr gtee...that is all you would get at a mechanics shop on any part.

Steve....cost....I was offered mine at £2.87 each to UK.... if I order a bulk amount either 10/100/1000 you know the score....down comes the price..

I was thinking of getting some for testing against a Mazda supplied one...and against a FD N3A1 171 15 which some Jap owners use (it's an RX7 one) and a Witz 90916-03093 (again another the Japs are known to use for....a Toyota  ) and report back later...

Interestingly, Mazda use the same 'stat even today in current production models as well as many passed models prior to and since the Friendee so I guess it's a robust and reliable bit of kit that they are happy with and suitable for more than just the WL-T engine.
