neck ache

Post by paulo » Thu Mar 22, 2007 6:53 pm

I have never driven a diesel or an automatic or a turbo before and I have had Ella Guru in for a thorough check and service, but I am still finding after 2 months that the acceleration when the turbo kicks in a surprise.

I know this is a bit subjective but does anyone else have this or is there something wrong?

Worth checking...

Post by ircbongo » Thu Mar 22, 2007 7:34 pm

Might be normal as Bongos are fairly nippy (in relative terms!), but it is worth checking there are no leaks in your turbo pipework - I had a small leak in the flexible pipe (clip had some loose and let the ipe move down slightly) which turned good but smooth acceleration into nothing...nothing...everything power.

Simple fix (undo clip, put pipe back on properly, retighten clip).

mine goes like stink i'f I put the foot down at traffic lights and leave the "boy racers" standing breathing in my exhaust fumes but the fuel consumption suffers but it is fun sometimes otherwise just take your time and enjoy the drive.
Be nice to everyone they might be nice back.

thats it aitch, it goes like shit of a shovel but I am trying to save on fuel. So do the turbo's increase the fuel consumption. Should I try to accelerate without them?

I used to drive a clapped out vauxhall astra 1.4 so you can understand the culture shock!

Having said that the bongo is such a joy to drive!!

know what you mean I came to the Bongo from a escort diesel with no turbo. I do enjoy the power now and again but tend to just breeze along most of the time with a big grin on my face as it is soooooo easy to drive and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I drive an Escort non-turbo diesel van most of the week, and compared to the Bongo it accelerates like a constipated slug! :) And it's got a horrible manual gearbox and a clutch, YUK! So primitive. :x

Glad to get in my Bongo on my days off.

Try to keep her under 2500 RPM Paulo, you,ll improve the M.P.G.

Try to make a habit of checking your tyre pressures once a week... Limit the aircon use... every bit helps bud

You could fit bucket seats and a full harness that might help the sore neck :D.

I'm still  at the pick-up speed compared to anything else i've driven.

Mines a manual (I wonder if they are faster then autos from a stand still :-k)

I still get a smile when mine kicks in.........the auto is probably quicker off the mark as the torque convertor nearly doubles the engine torque up to about 2000 rpm - then the turbo's ot full chat........... :D :D

For best acceleration, use the HOLD button - take off in HOLD 1 and manually shift into 2 and 3 at around 2500 rpm - that's where max torque is produced...............once you've left Wayne and his Corsa behind in a cloud of veg smoke, release the HOLD and let it take 4th and lockup. :D :D

I do guess the post about HOLD was not too serious, but some people may take it genuinely... :-)

HOLD would do nothing about good acceleration because it doesn't shift gears loading boundaries but just enables or disables various gears in different lever positions, just don't mix it with sporty modes some autos have (I used to drive such one). I.e. if you move on with good pressure to your acceleration pedal, then just plain "D" would do exactly the same job as "L+HOLD" with the exeption "D" would shift exactly in time to get the same level of acceleration on 2nd gear (and lower revs), while "L+HOLD" will keep its max revs not shifting, hence no more spead increase. In the best scenario you fill the right moment yourself to shift manually but in average/worst case you just miss it... ;-)

P.S. Another good joke would be to move on from "D+HOLD" as it also prevents shifting to the highest gear keeping more power on higher revs... :-D (well, not mentioning the fact it will move on from THE 2ND gear! :-D)

Ah, back to the topic: ;-) After 35hours of driving (having only one overnight) my neck came to crap, so I found really nice solution in Tesco: small silicone pillow attached to head-rest. Field testing during small two 10hours drivings had proven its exremely usefullness!

What I'm talking about is entirely practical jone_it..............by manually shifting you can choose when to change up using the HOLD button. IMO the gearbox shifts up too late in D - well out of the max torque band, by manually shifting around 2500/3000 revs the van accelerates faster.
