Bongo acting up

Post by vic swan » Wed May 02, 2007 3:45 pm

The Swango has been a bit reluctant to start for the last couple of days. Once started everything is OK when she has warmed up. Yesterday she stalled on me when I lifted my foot off the gas in traffic. She was still cold at the time. Any one any ideas as to what the problem may be. :?: :?
Please.

Hi Vic are you getting any smoke whilst trying to get going?

There should be some form of timing advance as with other diesels ( bit like a choke on a carb). On a Townace this is supplied courtesy of a thermowax device on the side of the pump but I still consider myself a novice to the Bongo engine I'm afraid, so don't know how it is provided here. Unfortunately I don't have the manual with me either. I'm guessing this is the area to look at. If getting smoke then you may be looking at tappet clearances or blocked injectors.

No smoke, just needs three or four goes before she catches then runs roughly for a couple of minits or so. New starter fitted about six weeks ago so that shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't think its glowplug considering the warm weather we are enjoying at the moment but what do I know :?:

One or two duff glow plugs is my guess.

Are glowplugs really that critical to the Bongo's startup routine? A few years back I inadvertantly ran my diesel Townace from March through to mid November with the glowplug circuit shot (a numpty mechanic had connected it up wrong and blew the fuse). Only when the outside temperature dropped did I notice a starting problem.

Mine is a bugger to start if I forget to turn the glowplugs on, and it stalls if I turn them off before moving off - no problem after a few hundred yards or if plugs switched on.

Through perusing the forum for years, i would say nine times out of ten, poor running before fully warmed is usually cured when new Glowplugs are fitted... The ambient temperature doesn't seem to make a vast amount of difference during the first few minutes of running, strangely enough...

The Swango has settled down now. The last two days I have had no problems at all, running as sweet as a nut. I am now wondering if perhaps a bit of muck evaded the fuel filter. Anyway chaps, thanks for the suggestions.
Cheers,
Vic
