so which is the best, easiest, way to do it

i have noticed that up at the back of the headlight, there is a socket. could i connect into this

To be honest alex & jan, i probably would never try to use that plug hanging down anyway.... I think i'd wire a set in from scratch, at least that way you will have an idea on where to troubleshoot if they dont work first time.
I havent wired a set of "foggies" in for quite a few years now, but from what i recall you will need a 4 spade rocker switch ( preferably illuminating) three or four different coloured rolls of automotive wire (check lights for amp/wattage) A relay.... An assortment of female spade connectors, scotchlok connectors, insulation tape, and maybe some heat shrink rubber.... Oh, and some lights!
I cant remember the exact way of wiring them in, so rather than giving you a "to the best of my memory" guide, google in "how to wire auxillary lights" or something similar.

Oh hey Ste that sounds complicated

maybe Alex should just fit them in place and not bother connecting them,
they'll still look the part

.....it's never foggy here in sunny Liverpool anyway

FYI - my Bongo passed the MOT on Saturday with front fogs fitted, but not wired up. I have read before that they are sometimes disconnected to pass SVA test (not sure why), so therefore it is not an MOT failure.

It is technically an MOT failure but most people just aren't picky enough to fail on something you don't need. If it is fitted it must work. The SVA guide is very clear on fitted lights functioning correctly. I have had to remove lights for the SVA several times. It all depends on how helpful the individual tester is.
If you want to wire your own foglights in here is the easiest way:
Find a lighting wire in the dash (eg control lighting).
Wire it to a switch on the dash (single pole is fine) with a 2A fuse in line.
Run the switched side to a relay fed from the battery.
Run the relay output to the new foglights.
If the lights are off the foglight is off. You should add a tell-tale - get a switch that lights up when it is on or put in a new warning light.
