gearbox question

hi all, can anyone explain why my bongo when i initially drive off is reluctant to change up gears? i've read on one of the topics that its due to the gearbox being cold, any information??
For the first 2 miles or so they stay in lower gears to
help warm up the engine ours only does it in cold weather
in summer it drives normally.
