engine number

does anyone know were to find the engine number on a 2000cc petrol 
hi,
i have a `98 petrol and registered it myself.i thought i needed it for the restristration application,but i think i remember being told on here that there isn`t one,but i`m sure someone will be along to confirm it one way or the other.
